Cocktail

A tailored suit, just not a tux. A tie is the safer choice, though many cocktail invites treat it as optional. Go darker after 6pm.

For this event
  • Leather soles slip and sink on lawns. Suede or a light rubber sole helps. Keep the jacket; it can come off after dinner.
  • Don't wear anything that could be mistaken for the wedding party's look. Match the groomsmen's formality or sit just below it.
  • After 6pm, go a shade darker than you would in daylight.
Skip these
  • A tuxedo (you will look like staff)
  • Sneakers, even nice ones
  • Short-sleeve dress shirts
  • Novelty ties
